Realising the immediate danger to the great waka, Wairaka dived in to the water and swam out to rescue the Mataatua. As Maori tradition forbade the right of women to paddle the waka, Wairaka climbed aboard and cried out, ‘Kia Whakatane au I ahau!” which means literally, ‘I will become a man”.
